June 3 -- China Telecom (0728.HK) is targeting to develop between 500,000 to one million FTTH (fiber to the home) users in 2010, reports cnii.com.cn.
The number of users of China Telecom’s FTTH services were below 10,000 at end 2009.
According to the report, the popularity of the FTTH service was due to a 25 percent reduction in FTTH network construction costs. The price of FTTH equipment by China Telecom had fallen to below $100 per user.
In addition, it is expected that the integration of cable TV, telecoms and Internet network will result in more value-added services such as video phone, video-on-demand and digital film becoming more prevalent.
The surfing speed of FTTH could reach 30 to 100 Mbps (megabits per second). It is compatible with global mainstream technology GPON (Gigabit-Capable PON).
