China Mobile’s 4G technology to be available

The company that provides mobile voice and multimedia services through its nationwide mobile telecommunications network is going for the trial of 4G network technology next year.

"Shanghai World Expo to be held next year would be the first commercial trial of 4G network technology”, said Wang Jianzhou,CEO of China Mobile.

4G refers to the fourth generation of cellular wireless and is a successor to 3G and 2G standards.

"China Mobile has been establishing a small-scale TD-LTE test network in Shanghai World Expo Park, and during the next year's Expo, we will launch the world's first commercial TD-LTE trial networks." Wang added.

A 4G system is an upgrade existing communication network and is expected to provide a comprehensive and secure IP based solution where facilities such as voice, data and streamed multimedia will be provided to users at much higher data rates compared to previous generations.

While 3G can support only up to 1-2 streaming media at the same time, the LTE can support 16 simultaneous streaming media transmission, and high-bandwidth can also support high-definition, real-time video transmission.

It is reported that the average download speeds of TD-LTE system can reach 60 Mbps, which is 20-30 times that of the main 3G networks.

Recently, Alcatel-Lucent had announced that it has been selected by China Mobile to deploy a TD-LTE trial network at the occasion of the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai; and the China-based Huawei Technology Ltd. has also reported that it has won China Mobile's 4G contract.
