May 6 -- China Telecom (0728.HK) plans to complete Fiber To The Home (FTTH) access for 500,000 to one million families in 2010, reports yicai.com, citing Wei Leping, chief engineer of China Telecom.
According to Wei, construction costs of the company's FTTH network have declined 25 percent in the past year.
Wei added that China Telecom has prepared for the construction of the FTTH network for six years and is entering into the application stage at present.
In early April, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Development and Reform Commission released a notice requiring telecom operators to speed up the construction of fiber-optic broadband networks in order to ensure that by 2011, broadband speeds for urban and rural residents will hit 8M and 2M respectively.
