Huawei has unveiled the first HSPA+ smartphone – the U8800 - powered by Android, featuring a 3.8-inch screen and supporting a downlink speed of up to 14Mbps. It will be commercially released in the third quarter.
 
Japanese PHS operator Willcom will file for bankruptcy protection in the Tokyo District Court today, according to the Nikkei.
 
Motorola said that it has won a turnkey Wimax contract from startup Fitel in northern Taiwan.
 
Thailand’s ICT and defense ministries have sounded out Chinese satellite manufacturers about building the country’s sixth satellite, said the Bangkok Post. Thaicom is holding out on building Thaicom-6 as it seeks an extension of its concession.
 
The web site of state broadcaster China Central Television was hacked by disgruntled viewers of its New Year’s Eve Gala, said the WSJ.
 
English-language China Daily even declared the 30-year-old gala coverage as “outdated.”
