More Taiwan-based network equipment makers, including Alpha Networks, Arcadyan Technology and Sercomm, are planning to channel more funds to the development LTE technology and related LTE CPE products, according to the companies and industry sources.

Arcadyan will focus on the development of LTE technology although it has previously also allocated funds to develop WiMAX products, said company president HY Lee.

Alpha Networks also plans to switch its WiMAX R&D team to develop LTE products, and is unlikely to ship WiMAX products in volume quantities, stated company chairman John Lee.

Instead of venturing into the WiMAX segment, Sercomm has teamed up with Verizon Wireless to develop LTE-enabled security IP cameras, according to earlier reports.

However, some industry watchers insisted that the current global market for WiMAX products is still large enough for Taiwan network equipment to generate substantial revenues and profits.

Makers continuing to deepen their deployment in the WiMAX segment, including Zyxel Communications, Accton Wireless Broadband (AWB), Tecom and Quanta Microsystems, are likely to become the major WiMAX players, commented the sources.
